Aesthetic villa

This thatched-roof house is in a leafy villa neighborhood and has a modern twist. It was designed by STATE of Architecture. The firm, led by Geert Verschuren and Bruce Verdonschot, works in both the Netherlands and Curaçao with a team of twenty professionals. They handle everything from architecture and interior design to garden design, from the first sketch to the finished house. This way, the villa is fully customized for the family, balancing style and function. The open layout, lots of natural light, and natural materials make the house feel calm and bring the outside in.

Entrance

Bright, inviting, and balanced

When you enter, you immediately notice the main line of the house. It organizes the rooms naturally: the office and garage are on the right, and the living room, kitchen, and covered terrace are on the left. The entrance feels grand because of the tall doorway and the double-height space, which lets in lots of light. Geert says: “This layout makes the house easy to understand. We wanted open spaces, but still cozy. Walls give subtle separation, the front is more closed for privacy, and the big windows at the back bring in daylight. Two L-shaped wings connect the garden and the house, so inside and outside flow together.”

A calm base

Living room and kitchen

Interior architect Tes Bartraij helped with the design. Tes says: “The owners have a home in Curaçao and wanted the same warm, relaxing feeling here. We used greige walls (a mix of grey and beige) with a micro cement finish. It reflects the grey Dutch light in a warm way. We also used a lot of wood, walnut, and rounded shapes.

Bedroom

Open, warm, and balanced

The master suite is upstairs under the thatched roof. Geert says: “The ceiling goes up to the roof, which makes the room feel very spacious. The bedroom is symmetrical, with the bed in the middle and closets on both sides. The front and back walls are all glass, reaching the roof peak. This lets in a lot of natural light and shows off the shape of the roof. From the bed, you can see the green roof and garden, making you feel connected to nature. The warm walnut finish and soft light give a Mediterranean-chic feeling: open, warm, and balanced.”

Bathroom

Architectural Flow

The bathroom, next to the master bedroom, has the same calm and stylish feeling. The shower goes up to the ceiling, which makes the room feel even bigger. Niches on the sides are finished with wood-look tiles, so it stays warm but is water-resistant. Plants add a natural touch. Above the freestanding bathtub hangs a designer lamp as a focal point. Natural materials, light, and textures make this bathroom a luxurious and relaxing place.
